On this page you will find links to various websites which you may find useful whilst planning your holiday to the Algarve. Beaches – The south coast beaches are very nice for wading, beach combing, safe swimming and sunbathing. The west coast (40min. away) is exciting, wild and excellent for surfing, body boarding, and the general enjoyment of the sea and dramatic cliffs and landscape. Birdwatching – Enjoy a unique trip along the western Algarve coast, which is a European hotspot for sea and migratory bird watching, such as storm-petrels, shearwaters and gannets.

* Car Hire – You must have proof of identity and a valid driving license. It’s wise to take out insurance coverage and collision insurance. Cars can not be hired out to anyone under 21.

Chemists – Are open 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. /3 p.m. – 7 p.m. Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings. In every area, you can always find one that is open all night or on Sunday. See the sign on the door (white cross on green background) to find your nearest chemist. The Portuguese word for chemist is “Farmácia”.   * Farmácia do Rio, in Portimão – open every day.

Climate – The Southern Portugal region has a ‘pocket’ climate – a Mediterranean-climate region – of which there are only a few others around the world. Average day-time temps – June:18º, July:20º, August:20-28º, Sept:19-25º.

Dolphin Watching – A dolphin watching trip is a unique and unforgettable holiday experience for the whole family.

Driving – All motor vehicles drive on the right. Unless otherwise indicated, vehicles approaching from the right have priority at junctions. Seat belts are obligatory. Children under 12 must travel in the back. The law is strict regarding drinking and driving and breathalysers are being used. It is compulsory to carry car documents in the car at all times; also the car hire contract, driving licence and passport. The maximum speed in towns is 50 km p/h and on main roads and highways is 90 and 120 km p/h respectively. Petrol stations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. On highways services stations are open 24 hours a day. When an accident happens, call the police and do not move your car.

* Formula 1 circuit – Just outside Portimão,  well signposted from the A22, the Algarve Motor Racing Circuit was created only a few years ago. It provides an excellent location for a family day out as it offers activities for all ages and has a café/restaurant

Postal services – Post offices are open Mon-Fri from 8.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. In main cities there is one post office station open on Saturdays. Stamps are sold here and also on shops bearing the sign of the red horse. The Portuguese word for post office is “Correios” and for stamp is “selo”.

Public holidays – Almost everything is closed on: January 1, April 25, Good Friday, May 1, Corpus Christi, June 10, August 15, October 5, November 1, December 1 and 8 and 25. Check also for local city holidays.

Taxis – They have an illuminated taxi sign at the top. In the city they charge a standard meter fare; outside the city’s limits they charge per kilometre and are entitled to charge for the return fare. In cities, luggage traveling in the booth adds a surcharge. From 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. there is a surcharge of about 20%. The usual amount to tip is 10% of the fare. Trains – There are Express trains from Lisbon (Alfa trains) and regional trains (Inter-cidades and Inter-regionais) connecting the different areas of Portugal. First and second class are available except for local and suburban trains. Get informed about: tourist tickets (valid for 7, 14 or 21 days), special rates on “Blue Days” (return tickets with discount for trips over 100 km), discounts for people over 65 . Train timetables are available from information desks at stations and tourism offices.

Vale do Lobo Golf – Play golf or arrange a golf lesson at one of the many world-class golf courses in the Algarve.

Water Activities

Weather – Portugal has a mild climate without extremes of temperature. Winters are never too cold and summers are always moderately hot.The South has a warm, dry Mediterranean climate without extremes of heat. Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera

West Coast – Walk on the wild side of the West coast of the Algarve: the breathtaking cliffs of Cape St. Vincent, the southwestern point of Europe and West Coast. Spend a day enjoying the beautiful west coast beaches where surfers choose to go at all times of the year.

Wineries –  There are several well known wineries in the region (wine tasting and buying). Growers are beginning to appreciate the region’s wine producing potential. Consequently vineyards are being replanted, cellars modernized and production methods updated.
